July Update

July 12th, 2010

It has been a little while since I’ve posted so there is lots to tell!

Busso Half Ironman

Busselton half Ironman was a fantastic event. Gemma, Bethanie and I all had a great time at the expo. It was great to catch up with so many athletes and to hear how well you went. Bethanie also completed the run leg as part of a team – well done Beth! To see some photos from the day click here

Gatorade Endurance

Good news! Gatorade Endurance is now available! Gatorade Endurance is similiar in nutritional composition to the “normal” Gatorade but has a higher sodium content, which may be more beneficial to athletes that cramp. Gatorade Endurance is also used at many Ironman events so its great to have the product available in Perth!

Simone is back at work!

As you may know I have been unavailable for individual consults as I had Zachary in April, but I’ll be returning soon! From August I’ll be available at our Bayswater clinic on Wednesdays and will also be returning to Ascend Physio at Challenge Stadium in the near future. We will also have a new Sports Dietitian joining our nutrition works team – stay tuned for details!

Survival Cookbooks

New AIS Survival Cookbooks have arrived – there are now 4 different AIS Survival cookbooks, all with great healthy and (most importantly) yummy recipes. Copies are available at Ascend Physio, Challenge Stadium and there are discounted rates for buying 2 or more different Survival books.

Healthy Comfort Foods

Finally as winter truly descends on us and the rain and cold become a daily occurence you may be at a loss for healthy comfort foods. If you are trying to lose or maintain weight over the next few months we are most happy to help make this easier for you with lots of tasty recipes included in your consult – just ask your Sports Dietitian to include them. If you would like to book an appointment just ring the most convenient location

One Man Epic Ends

April 19th, 2010

Unfortunately Tom’s attempt to reach the North Pole solo and unsupported has ended with a fall through the ice on the 48th day of his expedition. After spending 10 long minutes in the freezing water, most people would only survive five minutes, Tom was able to pull himself out of the water, set off his EPIRB and get into his tent and luckily six hours later he was rescued.

To read the full story and listen to an interview with Tom click here

I must say I’m so proud to have been a part of Tom’s team and have thoroughly enjoyed and been inspired by the adventure. Thanks to all the team, especially Jim and Georgina on keeping us all up to date. I wish Tom a speedy recovery and look forward to catching up with him in the very near future.

One Man Epic Update

April 15th, 2010

Tom is now over halfway in his goal to be the third person and first Australian to reach the North Pole solo and unsupported. I have now become slightly addicted to Jim’s blog of Tom’s progress and lookout for each new posting which includes phone conversations to Tom, tales of a possible extraction over Easter due to frostbite worsening and Tom’s continual struggle with the ice and everchanging conditions. Click here to check out the blog.

With only 12 days left to complete the epic journey, which I’m told is achieveable if Tom is handed the right conditions, my thoughts are turning to how best to ration out the last few food packs to stretch over a few extra days if need be and also how to assist Tom in his recovery once the journey is complete and he is back in civilisation. Look out for updates..

Foodie Fact #3: While Tom needs to eat ~40-42 MJ (or 40 -42, 000 kJ) daily to meet his daily nutritional requirements, we were limited to the food weighing only 1.2 kg daily! Like to see how we achieved this? Click here

Fuelling One Man Epic

March 15th, 2010

Tom is now 2 weeks into his solo and unsupported journey to the North Pole and everything is pretty much on track.

Everyday he is covering more ground as the ice becomes easier to navigate and the conditions are stable with minimal wind and ice drift.

Would you like to know what is fuelling Tom ? Click here for the nitty gritty on Tom’s food, how we estimated his energy requirements, the barriers we had to over come and how the pieces of the puzzle all fitted together to form Tom’s Daily Fuelling Plan!

Would you like to know what 20,000 kJ of food looks like while still weighing only ~1000g? Click here to see the photos of Tom’s food packing day on our facebook page.

Foodie Fact #2: Tom took 70 food bags with him, one for each day on the ice, ~45 “Pack A’s” and ~25″Pack B’s” .  “Pack A” provides ~40,700 kJ and weighs 1267g. Pack B provides 42,500 kJ and weighs 1363g.

One Man Epic Update

March 6th, 2010

Tom Smitheringale is now into Day 5 of his 800km trek to the North Pole. I must say I am getting addicted to reading the blog on his website as Jim is updating it daily with Tom’s latest adventures and progress.

While the ice is not in the best condition, very difficult to cross at present and Tom is currently “double hauling” dragging one sled over the ice and then going BACK for the other sled, other conditions are fairly favourable with good visibility, low winds (although Jim’s latest report says they are increasing) and minimal ice drift.

The distance Tom is covering each day is increasing which is great to hear but Tom will need to do some back tracking as he has encountered some impassable ice and a new tack is needed.

Tom is chowing through his 41-42,000 kJ (that’s ~10,000 cal for you calorie counters) daily with no trouble and I’m currently working on a “Tom’s Fuel” factsheet, so keep an eye out for the lowdown on all the yummy goodness that is fuelling Tom on his epic journey.

Here’s just one interesting foodie fact on Tom: Tom has 3 meals and 2 snacks daily. Each of these is ~7,100 to 11,000 kJ! With the average adults diet providing ~8700 kJ that means Tom is eating 4 to 5 times the average adult daily!

Tom is currently in Iqaluit, Canada acclimatising and in his final training phase. nutrition works have been fuelling Tom since June last year to help him gain weight for his trip and have also planned his daily food intake which is a mammoth 40-42MJ (yes, that’s 40, 000 to 42, 000 kJ daily). This is approximately four to five times the average daily intake of most adults!
